Poofy

Today’s post is from a short post by reporter Emily Cochrane
during the New York Times live video stream of the
memorial service for Jimmy Carter at Washington National Cathedral.
Later, the small Plains, Georgia, church appeared cozy and inviting by comparison.

A delightful word, both to say and to hear. Everybody pronounces it with slightly different emphasis.

Poofy does not appear as a variant spelling in the OED, even though the OED citations shows it as such, viz.,
  1. 1948
The voluminous look..poufy with seafoam veiling, flowers, taffeta bows.
Syracuse (New York)  Herald-Amer. 7 March 5 (advertisement)
  2. 1971
She wore a floor-length gown..fashioned with an Empire bodice, cameo neckline and long poofysleeves with ruffle trim.
Sunday Times (Salisbury, Maryland)  7 February  b7/1

A nice family memento.

* But, all could be gone in a pouf of wind. It only takes an ember. . .  Perhaps you too know somebody whose home burned down in Los Angeles.
